45 Years ago in August 1963 - Martin Luther King Jr delivered his “I have a dream’ speech.
Will today be the day? Here is the original recording of that famous speech that changed the world.
.
Update: 9.30am Thursday 5th November 2008
Barack Obama was just 2 years old when Martin Luther made that speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
In my lifetime, 45 Years, 2 months and 7 days after that speech, I’ve seen America progress from the time of segregation to it’s people electing it’s first African-American President.
What an incredible democracy the United States of America is.
Its only 5 days until the US presidential election. I was asked the other day by an Agmates reader why I have not done more articles on the US election?
This brings up one of my pet dislikes. It just irks me how the mainstream media in every election no matter where it is try to convince us that its close. For example in the last two Australian federal elections, the media called it ‘to close to call’ or a favorite, ‘it will go down to the wire’. Both were clear victories to the Coalition in 2004 and Labor in 2007.
Ridiculously the media has been doing it again this week, saying that McCain is gaining ground and talking about an obscure thing called the Bradley effect.
This is clearly rubbish. It has been clear for at least a month, Obama will win by a landslide. The Republicans will cop a flogging. Thats why I’ve not bothered doing much on what has been a foregone conclusion since early September.
I’ve no doubts John McCain is a top candidate and would have done his best as President. It would not have mattered how good the Republican Candidate was, after 8 years of Republican rule under George Bush the US economy is a basket case and the voters will reject the party outright because of that.
It’s been said and only half Jokingly that the only way George Bush could be anymore unpopular with the American public is if his own family turned on him.
Anyway, just because its worth watching, here is Obama’s 27 minute address to the US nation broadcast on prime time US Network television last night.
After 6 years of wrangling the USA has introduced legislation that requires retailers to label the food they sell with the name of the country that it came from. They call this COOL or Country of Origin Labeling.
In the light of recent food containation scandals this is a great idea. Do we have it in Australia or New Zealand or any other countries you know of?
Agmate Joel from the US has sent us this. Its funny - thanks mate.
In 1965 Dr. Peter Witt gave drugs to spiders and observed their effects on web building. This short film about the results of the experiment was created by First Church Of Christ, Filmmaker.
Have you been watching the US elections. Sarah Palin swept to the publics attention worldwide when she became John McCain’s vice president running mate.
I’ve been dying to comment on her appointment. This Video comment by Keith Olbermann from 3 days ago, I think says most of the things I’ve been thinking.
It is unbelievable that anyone could ever think that this ‘moose-hunting, soccer mum’ could be elected as vice president considering that Mccain if elected would be the oldest president elect ever.
If elected Palin would be just a 72 year old heart beat from the United States Presidency …… sssshhhhheeesh
