The yarding was 10,500 head at this weeks Roma store cattle sale. This was up 1,700 head on last week. The store index fell 1.4 points this week. it has fallen 3.4 points or 3.5% in the last 2 weeks.

It’s accepted that Steers in a weight range will make a 20 cent per kilo liveweight premium over heifers of the same weight range. I believe a good indication to future price movements is to track the Premium gap between steers & heifers.

Last week I predicted -

“Expect to see weaner heifers improve by up to 10 cents next week as a 30 cents gap is not sustainable.”

Weaner Heifer prices improved this week by 11 cents.

Last week I predicted that heifer over 350 KGs would ease this week. they didn’t. At present the price gap between steers and heifers over 350kgs is just 6-8 cents. Historically this is not sustainable, although good if you are selling heavy heifers.

The yarding was back to 8,700 head at this weeks Roma store cattle sale. This was down 3,300 head on last week.  The store index fell 2.3 points.

They eased by 8 cents. You will likely see them ease a bit more next week. Expect to see weaner heifers improve by up to 10 cents next week as a 30 cents gap is not sustainable.

The largest Yading of the year with 12,000 head at this weeks Roma store cattle sale. This was up 2,500 head on last week. Of the yarding 3,400 head came from these 4 vendors:

The Murray family, Kindee Pastoral Co, Injune, with 1,664 head - 1017 steers & 647 heifers. Comprising - 440 Charolais cross steers averaging 332kg, 576 Santa cross and Angus cross steers averaged 350kg, 332 mainly Santa cross heifers averaging 350kg and 315 Charolais cross heifers averaging 300kg.

Western Grazing Co “Rocklands” Camooweal with a line of 684 Santa heifers averaging 201kg.

Allendale Cattle Co “Allendale” Morven with 600 Droughtmaster cross and Angus cross heifers averaging 205kg.

Ralph Russell “Brides Creek” Blackall with 456 head. Comprising 223 mainly Charolais cross steers averaging 264kg and 233 mainly Charolais heifers. Averaging 255kg.

This week all weigh ranges except heavier feeder types over 350kgs were back in range. Expect heavier heifers to ease by about 10-13 cents next week.

And I was wrong, the gap has got wider. I still think it has too happen. We’ll see if it corrects itself next week.

9500 head were yarded at this weeks Roma store cattle sale. This was up 1,000 head on last week. The increase came mainly from large consignments of young heifers from Kidmans Naryilco property (350 head) and AAco’s Avon Downs (530 head).

8500 head were yarded at yesterdays Roma store cattle sale. We publish the Roma store cattle market results because it is the ONLY market that has an index to work off. This is a guide although it would be more accurate if the index was adjusted to the annual Agricultural inflation rate.

The Agflation rate is different of from normal inflation as it reflects the annual increase in farm input costs such as, chemical, fertilizer, labor, diesel (transport) and interest rates. If AgFlation was factored into the index it would give farmers & graziers a true indication of store beef cattle returns.

This week all weigh ranges except weaners under 220kgs were back in range. Expect weaner steers under 220kgs to be 10-15 cents stronger than this week.

Roma Store Cattle Sale on Tuesday yarded 6400 head. Heavier steers, heifers and cows were all easier and the Roma Store Index was back 4.1 points to 101.1 points.

Of last weeks market I said:

“This would indicate that if we see any number of weaner steers at Roma next week, under 220kgs heifer values will take a hit of 15-20 cents.“

And they did. Heifers in the under 220kgs weight range lost 13 cents whilst the steers gained 11cents bringing the premium for steers back up to 21cents.

Don’t take any notice of the huge jump quoted for heifers over 450kgs as this was exclusively a line of 92 Charbray Breeder heifers from Augathella that makes this look like a 42 cent gain.

The North Australian Pastoral Co (NAPCO) offloaded a line of 460 cross bred cows from their Mount Isa property “Glenormiston Station”. The cows were sold open auction for $650/head.

Of last weeks market I said:

“Now the market has swung to much the other way with Steers only making 3-7 cents av more than heifers in the 220-350kg weight range (last week it was 34-40 cents). So you can expect another substantial price adjustment next week.”

As predicted we did see exactly that. Steers in the 220-350kgs weight range gained 11-19 cents on heifers of the same weight. Thats a 7-13% upswing in steers values in a week. The market is back in range for all classes except weaner steers under 220kgs.

This would indicate that if we see any number of weaner steers at Roma next week, under 220kgs heifer values will take a hit of 15-20 cents.
