Lifes Little Pleasures

I’m making a confession, I’m a watcher and lover of birds – the feathered variety that is.

I was just having a coffee with my princess and in the garden we saw a beautiful little dove. Foraging through my bird bible Photographic Field Guide Birds of Australia (second edition) that my princess gave me back in 2005 we identified it as the Spotted Turtle Dove.

Yes that may be right , Jeff they maybe the Red Tailed Black Cockatoos .

I have a tribe of quails I saw in the garden this morning – 2 adults and 8 babies .
Another great little family I have are the Superb wrens .

Even the common old magpie gives pleasure. I have recently noticed the difference between our black backed magpie (on the Mid North Coast NSW) and the white backed magpie in Tasmania after a trip down south. Looks nearly the same.

We have Glossy Blacks on the East coast, the female shows some red on the underside of the tail feathers and some yellow around the neck. (A Concise Photographic Field Guide – Donald and Molly Trounson) . It is not uncommon to see flights of 7 – 20, usually on route to the casuarina scrub on the coast.

What you may be seeing up North are Red Tailed Black Cockatoos

Yes Rowell it is the Glossy black with the red tail – they do love the belah nuts and I guess their call is soft compared to the white’s loud noise – I hope it is not endangered, it is certainly not in huge numbers of the white cockatoo . We have mostly blue bonnett, red-rumped and red -wing parrots here. One of the prettiest birds around here is the rainbow bird .

Margaret, in QLD there is a black cockie called a Glossy black, perhaps endangered, I see them often, live on belar nuts , soft, delecate sounding as they fly over….

Hey Steve from the west, did you ever see a Cloncurrie parrot? a northern ringneck? like the 28 parrot but just a bit lighter.

I too love birds, they punctuate life in the bush with their colours and sounds and habbits.

Mate that is a great line and sums up exactly how I think about birds.

No I don’t think I have, but I’ve seen plenty of Mallee Ringnecks and Port Lincoln Parrots (as you would have) – The 28 is hard to distinguish from the Port Linclon unless you hear their call.

Talking about birds I saw 6 black cockatoos fly over this morning , haven’t seen them for a long time – they make a strange noise so you know when they are around – they usually mean a lot of rain coming so I hope so they know something.
