Is PM Kevin Rudd another James Hansen Disciple?

If you still have doubts about whether man made climate change is real, stop it because according to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd:

.

We must prepare for a low-carbon economy, to delay any longer, to stay in denial as the climate change skeptics and some members opposite would have us do, is reckless and irresponsible.

.

The Prime Minister made that statement in an unexpected and impassioned speech yesterday near the end of a long parliamentary debate on a government bill that clears the way for millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide to be stored under the sea.

Throughout the speech Rudd emphasized the need for URGENT action:

.

Expert analysis points to severe global and national consequences including rising sea levels, more severe weather events, water shortages, large-scale migration, increased threats to border security, loss of infrastructure and regional conflict over increasingly scarce resources.

.

He finished up with the following emotion call to action (more about this later):

“For our generation, for our kids and future generations, we must act now.”

.

The Prime Minister has continually maintained that he takes his advise from the IPCC science on this matter.

But who are these expert analysis?

From the Prime Minister’s agenda and language it would appear that his adviser on the science is none other than James Hansen. Hansen is the father of the Global warming alarmist movement since the 1980’s and just happens to be AlGore’s science adviser.

A personal letter written from James Hansen written to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on the 27th of March 2008 is most revealing. You can click through and read the letter in full at the Crikey web site, but here are some extract that show Rudd parroting what Hansen has written:

In the letter Hansen urges Rudd to act - just notice how he plays to Rudd’s ego and his ambition to be a major player on the world stage. Hansen lays it on with a trowel.

.

image of James HansenI recognize that for years you have been a strong supporter of aggressive forward-looking actions to mitigate dangerous climate change. Also, since your election as Prime Minister of Australia, your government has been active in pressing the international community to take appropriate actions.

We are now at a point that bold leadership is needed, leadership that could change the course of human history.

.

Hansen then goes on to say the situation is URGENT, NEAR critical tipping points and then spells out what COULD happen:

.

“Global climate is near critical tipping points that could lead to …. progressive, unstoppable global sea level rise, shifting of climatic zones with extermination of many animal and plant species, reduction of freshwater supplies for hundreds of millions of people, and a more intense hydrologic cycle with stronger droughts and forest fires, but also heavier rains and floods, and stronger storms driven by latent heat, including tropical storms, tornados and thunderstorms.

.

Funny that’s exactly what Rudd has been telling the Australian Public, almost word for word. Then Hansen goes on to chronicle the dangers of coal and recommend the development of the very thing that Rudd unexpectantly spoke so passionately about in Parliament yesterday, carbon capture. -

.

“Due to the dominant role of coal, solution to global warming must include phase-out of coal except for uses where the CO2 is captured and sequestered.

Yet there are plans for continuing mining of coal, export of coal, and construction of new coal-fired power plants around the world, including in Australia, plants that would have a lifetime of half a century or more.”

Then Hansen lays it on with a trowel again. Note the word COULD

.

Your leadership in halting these plans COULD seed a transition that is needed to solve the global warming problem.

If Australia halted construction of coal-fired power plants that do not capture and sequester the CO2, it could be a tipping point for the world. There is still time to find that tipping point, but just barely.

I hope that you will give these considerations your attention in setting your national policies. You have the potential to influence the future of the planet.

Prime Minister Rudd, we cannot avert our eyes from the basic fossil fuel facts, or the consequences for life on our planet of ignoring these fossil fuel facts.

If we continue to build coal-fired power plants without carbon capture, we will lock in future climate disasters associated with passing climate tipping points. We must solve the coal problem now.

.

To finish Hansen recommends 7 Australian scientist who are his disciples, for further reference.

I commend to you the following Australian climate, paleoclimate and Earth scientists to provide further elaboration of the science reported in my attached paper (Hansen et al., 2008):
Professor Barry Brook, Professor of climate change, University of Adelaide
Dr Andrew Glikson, Australian National University
Professor Janette Lindesay, Australian National University
Dr Graeme Pearman, Monash University
Dr Barrie Pittock, CSIRO
Dr Michael Raupach, CSIRO
Professor Will Steffen, Australian National University
Sincerely,
James E. Hansen
Kintnersville, Pennsylvania
United States of America

.

Oh don’t forget the references to the little children.

Hansen said:

Prospects for today’s children, and especially the world’s poor, hinge upon our success in stabilizing climate.

.

Or here from Hansen’s report on his lobbying trips to the UK, Germany & Japan in July

If we continue to ignore obvious geophysical facts about the magnitude of fossil fuel reservoirs, our children and grandchildren will have little reason to forgive our obtuseness.

.

Kevin Rudd in Parliament yesterday:

“For our generation, for our kids and future generations, we must act now.”

.

Or Here from his appearance on 60 minutes.

Look at your kids in the eye tonight and ask yourself this question - “If we have this much evidence available to us now “on climate change and just refuse to act, “then what are the consequences for them?”

.

It’s comforting to know that an American NASA professor who cannot convince his own government to sign the Kyoto protocol is driving Australia to leading the world into a carbon constrained future.

It appears that on the advice of a one US professor Kevin Rudd is about to launch Australia into the greatest shake up of our economy the nation has ever seen. By the time the Kevin Rudd / James Hansen agenda is in place we will be poorer as a nation, but at least we’ll be cleaner.

Oh sorry I forgot because we only represent 1.3% of world CO2 emissions, cutting our Greenhouse gas emission will actually have zero impact on world emissions.

But its important to be seen on the world stage as a visionary leader and savior of the planet, when you spend as much time overseas as Kevin Rudd does. Isn’t it Kevin?

.

Have Your say!

  1. Tim Curtin says:

    Matt:

That CO2 is a fertiliser is hardly groundbreaking, hundreds of peer reviewed journal papers have documented this over 50 years, it is just that Brook & co refuse to admit it.

It is for them to prove CO2 has no fertilising effect, and they never have.

  2. Tim Curtin says:

    Matt: you are wrong.

I am well aware of the difference between CO2 and CO2e, unlike Barry Brook’s bravenewclimate (so far).

The problem is that Brook & co refuse to accept that the “e” bit of CO2e has failed to increase since 1990. But that does not deter them from extrapolating the non-CO2 at the same rate as the CO2.

It’s late, but if you would like more info, contact me here!

  3. Matt says:

Sorry Tim but if you are, I assume knowingly, totally ignoring the difference between the CO2 and CO2e, and therefore why one tends to report much lower levels than the other. They are different things…. 450ppm CO2 is totally different than 450ppmCO2e. And you know it.

Don’t forget Agmates has recently reference the Global Carbon project, so obviously they don’t think they are totally whacko…

Readers should have a look at bravenewclimate website for a thorough explanation of the different methods of reporting carbon so that us layfolk can understand.

  4. Tim Curtin says:

    Good stuff, Agmate.

Here are some comments of my own on Barry Brook (banned of course from his Blog bravenewclimate), what is he scared of?

Brook has been reported by the media endorsing the so-called Global Carbon project, which is yet another largely CSIRO-inspired ramp, led by James Hansen’s friends, the notorious data manipulators Pep Canadell and Mike Raupach.

Their cheer leader, Barry Brook’s puff ends by citing GCP’s claim that “Emissions from the combustion of fossil fuel and land use change reached the mark of 10 billion tonnes of carbon [GtC] in 2007. Natural CO2 sinks are growing, but more slowly than atmospheric CO2, which has been growing at 2 ppm per year since 2000”.

Let’s analyse this more closely. Brook chose not to explain that 2ppm equate to 4.25 GtC (i.e. 2.12 GTC = 1 ppm). So what we had in 2007, on the Brook/GCP data, is 10 GtC of emissions, and 4.25 GtC of atmospheric increase, leaving no less than 5.75 GtC (57.5%) taken up by the “slow growing” natural sinks, above the average of 56% since 1958.

But then as a mere economist whom am I to query the accounting techniques of Nobel [Peace] Prize winners like Canadell, who thinks that the rise in atmospheric CO2 since 1958, from 315 ppm to 384 ppm at end-2007, reveals an annual growth rate of 1.89 % pa. (this fictitious rate is what underpins the Garnaut Draft Report).

Finally, Brook assures us that “450ppm CO2 commits us to >2 degrees C global warming and all the disastrous consequences this sets in train”.

Whatever happened to CO2e, which as Garnaut states, is already at 455 ppm? These disastrous consequences should already be apparent. Perhaps the meltdown on Wall Street is caused by CO2e emissions?

    • Agmates says:

      G’day Tim,

Great to hear from you and thanks for your input. Not surprised Professor Brook banned you from commenting on his bravenewclimate blog.

At Agmates we are happy to accept all input except those that are racist, bigoted etc. We’d even take Brook’s comment if he was “brave” enough to poke his head out to enter into some decent debate.

Have you seen this post on Agmates from the weekend?

I think you have but just in case here it is.

      Cheers - Steve

  5. Von Curtis says:

Yes so much evidence appears to get shredded - it really does seem there are more crooks and psychopaths in suits out of jail than in it.

Such a long long run of revolting people with political power - when and how will it change I wonder .

  6. Jeff says:

    Hi Von Curtis,

Please don’t construe what I’m about to say, we’re both on the same side.

You will notice I do not address the Prime Minister as anything but the Prime Minister or Kevin Rudd, and try not to get too emotional about it. A the office of the Prime Minister is an office that requires respect, but unfortunately, the holder of that office may not engender that respect.

Things could be worse - we may have a Republic and be addressing Kevin Rudd as President!

Having said that, I presume you have heard of the Heiner Affair, also known un-officially as “Shreddergate”.

The page this link to is headed Kevin Rudd.
    (Wayne Goss’s Mr Fixit)

You can also search Qld State Hansard for the enquiry. It is all on record.

  7. Von Curtis says:

I saw on SBS news last night neocon fascist socialist Rudd meeting with extreme fascists Murdoch and Kissinger in New York.

There is definitely something very sinister about the creep Rudd - he appears to be very cold, calculating and without emotions and he appears to have a plan that he will ruthlessly implement.

I fear nothing but huge numbers of people on the streets protesting will stop him. Things will have to get a much much worse yet before that happens - people are too obedient and dumbed down.

  8. Jeff says:

    MatttB,

The point is the man is a whacko, his ‘esteemed’ predictions are wrong, as evident by his dire predictions from 20 years ago.

Pretty much on the ball when it comes to climate science? I doubt it, his record is pathetic. He ranks with the alarmists Paul and Anne Ehrlich, they got it wrong too.

If you did watch the web TV program, you would see the same old alarmist footage that has been lugged around like the itinerant market vendor trying to peddle his old wares and secondhand goods.

Scenes of sea ice melting before your eyes, done poorly with computer enhancement, flashes of polar bears on small iceflows, flooding by what looks like a tsunami flow. All the usual scenes that have been used before to frighten a public who mostly wouldn’t have any science training.

That media outlet is aimed at ethnic minorities, possibly with a fairly low standard of schooling, but ripe for the instilling of the Hansen form of propaganda.

And Dr James Hansen is an adviser to his disciple and our Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

I’ll agree about Aussies eating far more meat than necessary, balance is necessary in diet. But the flashing, subliminal messages on that website/TV outlet is mind shaping propaganda.

  9. Matt says:

I still don’t get your point to be honest Jeff.

You had a go at me for playing the man not the ball the other day. It doesn’t really matter what whacky TV show Hansen is on, he is still pretty much on the ball when it comes to climate science.

As for balanced diet? My call is that Aussies eat far more meat than is required for a balanced diet.

  10. Jeff says:

    Your right MattB,

Farmers do grow grains and vegetables, that’s not in dispute. But not grown by the cattle producers, deer/venison producers, pig farmers and poultry producers that produce the first class protein that is used to keep our diets balanced.

I suppose that the properties that are being used to produce meat, venison, pork and chicken could be turned into tree farms, National Parks and reserves to keep the naive urbanites happy (Oh and the carbon sequestering lot).

And for those of us unfortunate enough to require meat in our diet can buy imported product from the US producers, or if we’d like to take pot luck, buy meat from China (they’ve got some good milk to wash it down with).

    MattB, you wrote:

“And ha ha - NO I”VE NOT WATCHED THE LINK… what kind of loony do you think I am that I’d waste my time on a website hosted by a “supreme master”.

I would have thought you would have been real eager to watch the “esteemed Dr James Hansen” on that website. No?

MattB, not looking for racists websites to read skeptic information.

“I don;t need to go to KKK TV for unbalanced views on Climate change - I can just pick up the WA daily newspaper for my daily fix of skepticism.”

Does the WA daily paper carry a recital from Dr James Hansen, backed by information by Supreme Master Ching Hai? thought not.

This is the man that is advising our Prime Minister.

  11. MattB says:

Hmm - I was under the impression that grains, legumes, vegetables etc were also grown by farmers?

Or is that just my urban naivety showing through?

Also - I don’t need to go to KKK TV for unbalanced views on Climate change - I can just pick up the WA daily newspaper for my daily fix of skepticism.

And ha ha - NO I”VE NOT WATCHED THE LINK… what kind of loony do you think I am that I’d waste my time on a website hosted by a “supreme master”.

I’ll give you a hint though Jeff… I recommend you visit a few racist websites like stormfront and the like… and you will find that they are very very very skeptical… and publish every kooky link they can…

Would you like me to infer that every “scientist” who is a skeptic is a KKK racist>??? Thought not.

  12. Jeff says:

    MattB,

I feel sure you would express the same sentiment if the program was on a “rednecked KKK web TV or satellite TV” outlet. Backdrop with Confederate flags and burning crosses, side bar advertising huge BBQed steaks, washed down with Bourbon whiskey, scantily dressed girls.

Just a TV station MattB, we must keep our balanced views.
    ———
I also feel sure that the readers of Agmates would really relish the vegetarian and vegan concepts being pushed very hard on that site. According to the SOS page on Supreme Master’s TV, eating meat is the cause of Global Warming.

And amongst this dazzling display we have Dr James Hansen spouting off his usual drivel, tipping points, melting sea ice (and drowning polar bears - appeals to the animal lovers) glaciers melting and making the sea rise 20m? - 50m? - 100m? And all that dirty coal (cue: power station evaporative cooling towers picture insert).

This is the person that is an adviser to our Prime Minister, and providing the impetus on Australia’s Climate Change and Carbon E.T.S.

No wonder I could only watch the first half of the Hansen video on Supreme Master TV hosted by Supreme Master Ching Hai. My stomach’s not strong enough to watch it all together.

I assume MattB you have watched the video, or have you just been standing outside and commenting?

  13. MattB says:

But it is just a TV station Jeff? Is your issue with Hansen being on the TV station, or with the actual content of his interviews/talks? I’m sure he has appeared on many many TV stations.

  14. Jeff says:

    Matt,
    Try this:
    http://tinyurl.com/2nfry6

It appears that for some reason, it won’t take the full url.

  15. Jeff says:

Just add tv after the r in master, b/fore the period.

    Something is stopping my posting.

  16. Matt says:

Jeff that link is to a web-domain hosting site that wants to sell me the web address…?

  17. Jeff says:

    Thread title:
“Is PM Kevin Rudd another James Hansen Disciple?”

To which I can only reply: OMG I hope not, after watching one of Dr James Hansen’s speeches on an internet TV site:-

“Supreme Master TV”, a satellite TV (14 satellite platforms around the world),and an internet TV outlet.
Part of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association.
    Internet TV url:
    http://www.suprememaster.com

You can watch one or more of Dr James Hansen’s speeches on this site. Then ask yourself, what the h— is our Prime Minister getting us into if he is a James Hansen Disciple.

  18. Demesure says:

Hansen claims to write to PM Rudd as a citizen but doesn’t neglect to mention he is Director of the GISS/NASA. That’s an hypocritical excuse for a clear case of abuse of his civil servant position.

The most nauseating hypocrisy is that his signs his letter as a citizen of Kintnersville, Pennsylvania.

But wait a minute, from his home to his workplace at the GISS/University of Columbia, NYC, google maps shows the distance is 141 km (1h46 to 2h40 trip!).

So Hansen is claiming to the world’s leaders the Earth is at its tipping point because of fossil carbon emissions which must be slashed to zero by 2050 but that doesn’t prevent him from making 140 km trips to go to work (I presume by car or at best by coal-electricity powered trains)???

Either he is insane, or he knows well that the “looming climate crisis” is all crap. He will serve well the climate by retiring from the GISS and staying in his Kintnersville sweet home.

  19. Jeff says:

After all, it was only a break statement:

“After all, that’s where our Global Warming and Climate Change in general is coming from, that medium sized yellow star that hopefully keeps coming up in the East every day. Life would get suddenly very hard if it didn’t - just ask the guys in Greenland and Alaska who only lose it for the few days in the middle of Winter.”

    A statement of the obvious!

The usual Climate Change Alarmist usually discounts the effects of the sun “as being only radiative and it has only varied by 0.000XXX% and the Warming/Climate change is caused by GHG”, but the warming/climate change doesn’t quite run true to that, when you consider the Medieval Warming Period, and later the cooling of the Mini Ice-Age.
But then again Michael Mann sort of leaves out that data in MBH98 and even now with the hockeystick Mk11.

  20. Jeff says:

    Matt,

You would be aware that NASA G.I.S.S. home of the ‘esteemed’ Dr James Hansen is not necessarily NASA HQ.

For instance there is a lot of valuable research coming out of NASA and the European Space Agency ESA, to do with solar activity, sun spots, solar wind and electromagnetic effects, that thankfully doesn’t have to be filtered or adjusted through Dr James Hansen’s Department.

After all, that’s where our Global Warming and Climate Change in general is coming from, that medium sized yellow star that hopefully keeps coming up in the East every day. Life would get suddenly very hard if it didn’t - just ask the guys in Greenland and Alaska who only lose it for the few days in the middle of Winter.

Work by Erik Svensmark, eventually peer reviewed and published, after he got away from the old boy network, shows that heating effects are not necessarily direct radiative, but can also be influenced by solar activity and magnetic effects as well as outside influences such as cosmic rays.

    • Matt says:

Who is denying that the sun is a major player in our climate?

But from what I understand there seems to be little/no correlation between the cloud forming abilities of cosmic rays unshielded during periods of low solar activity… or whatever that argument is from Svensmark.

But no doubt it is a field of climate science that will be investigated thoroughly and who knows may well reveal that the sun will get us off the hook.

You say “after all” as though it is proven science that people are ignoring? That is certainly not the case.

  21. Matt says:

Call me naive but Id assume that the bloke who heads the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies is fully aware of such NASA research.

  22. Jeff says:

Before our Prime Minister commits the Australian taxpayer to an ever increasing amount of spending, such as the current concept of developing a carbon sequestering system, he and his advisers (hopefully without James Hansen), should view findings about to be made public on 23/9/2008 from NASA on solar events. (Note: Time shown as EDT US time)

    Extract:
NASA To Discuss Conditions On And Surrounding The Sun

“WASHINGTON — NASA will hold a media teleconference Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, to discuss data from the joint NASA and European Space Agency Ulysses mission that reveals the sun’s solar wind is at a 50-year low. The sun’s current state could result in changing conditions in the solar system.”

Couple that with the announcement made by the Space and Science Research Center last July 1 2008:

(Strange how we haven’t seen that in the MSM)

Space and Science Research Center is a science and engineering research company, who collaborate and consult with NASA.

Interesting explanation about sunspot activity on a page headed “NASA Long Range Solar Forecast”

If you have been watching SpaceWeather.com you would have seen that sunspots are at a minimum, since last year, a situation that hasn’t been equaled since 1913.

Possibly means that we should all be looking at improved food production and an improved, economical energy supply instead of playing with “hot air”, and screwing dollars and/or land from the rural sector.

  23. Jeff says:

That $100m Australian taxpayer funded project is disgusting when the star recruit looks like he has the guiding hand of Dr James Hansen. And with green activists demonstrating in Germany about sequested CO2, too what point?

In Investors Business Daily, shows a link from Dr James Hansen to billionaire George Soros. Read it at:
    http://tinyurl.com/38escw
And wonder who is pulling whose strings.

  24. Jeff says:

Posting late at night does dreadful things to your memory, so I apologise for omitting very important piece of information from Professor James Hansen:

“Phase out coal and burn trees instead, urges leading scientist”
    http://tinyurl.com/6k37xt
Along with the mandatory picture of power station cooling tower steam exhausts.

Now if we adopted this fuel instead of that “dirty old King Coal” , it would give the Total Environment Centre (TEC) and Geoff Angel apoplexy, with their ‘dob in a tree clearer’ mindset. Maybe we could import timber from the ‘Lungs of the Earth’ the Amazon River basin.

No, I feel NASA’s esteemed climate scientist and Nobel prize winner Dr James Hansen, should be put in the same bin as our own Dr Sulphur Tim Flannery, who as a matter of ‘last resort’ would have aircraft spray sulphur into the atmosphere, to change the colour of the sky and save us from Global Warming.

If PM Kevin Rudd is another James Hansen Disciple, Heaven forbid!

And a line I pinched from someone else’s blog:
‘Having a dog called Kyoto, and wearing a green scarf, does not make an environmentalist.’

  25. Matt says:

Why is it only skeptics think that the fact there is more sea ice this year than last year means anything?

Are you aware that more ice melted this year than ever before? and that it is the 2nd lowest amount of ice ever recorded?

  26. Jeff says:

How did you spell that Matt?

    Was that -> world’s L-E-A-D-I-N-G climate scientist?
Since Al Gore’s Nobel prize, the Nobel prize looks like a McDonald’s prize.

James Hansen has stepped out of line by advocating the gaoling of oil and energy CEOs, not very scientific!

James Hansen is the scientist that is making the same dire predictions today as he did in 1988, that in 20 years the sea level will rise by “metres”, it didn’t, and that the temperature will rise by X degrees, they didn’t, they have stalled and are dropping.(Climate Change you say?)

The polar ice caps will melt - they did, only slightly in the Arctic, and that’s not unusual, it happens on a regular basis. But now at the end of the melt season have increased by 9% from last season.(I watch the dailies from the Norwegian Ice data centre)

And Rudd seeks advice from this esteemed scientist?
No wonder our Prime Minister is confused, firstly the number of scientists reviewing IPCC AR4 - Rudd 4000 scientists, IPCC 2500 scientists, later reviewed by IPCC to many less. And now with Garnaut dropping the percentage of GHG to 10%.

    Poor little Kevin07.
And Rudd seeks advice from this esteemed scientist?

    • Von Curtis says:

Interesting comment on about James Hansen :

“For instance, according to James Hanson, NASA climatologist, the maximum carrying capacity of CO2 in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million, we now have 385 parts per million, and the tipping point, where global warming will be incredibly difficult to stop, is staring us in the face (2016?)”

James Hanson is the author of the famous hockey stick graph that Gore uses as a basis for his doomsday forecasts. He is also on the payroll of George Soros another very ethical character, whose motives are all altruistic. Global warming and climate change is directly related to solar activity, not carbon dioxide. The most potent greenhouse gas is water vapor. I suppose that we should do away with water while we are at it. This author has fallen for the MSM propaganda about climate change. Perhaps he and Hanson should study the years 1000 to 1300 AD and then talk about carbon dioxide and global warming.

  27. Matt says:

But Jeff what is it guilt of?

Listening to one of the planets most esteemed climate scientists, and a Nobel prize winner! Outrage! And people then have the cheek to laud Monckton as some sort of reliable source…

As for Silent spring and DDT? my source is wiki, and the stockholm convention on pops… but the us may have banned in the us separately.

Main point though - I don’t think “Rudd seeks advice from world’s leading climate scientists and Nobel prize winner” will lose him any votes… I’d suggest the conspiracy theorists already don’t vote for Rudd.

  28. Jeff says:

    Matt, just for your information:

    DDT cleared for fighting malaria
    Deborah Zabarenko - Reuters Mon,18 September 2006

Then you go down to the link, “Africans Fighting Malaria”, where you can even ‘Donate’ to help out. Unless you have something against Africans?

The original post with link to the Aust Government page:
was to show influences from enviro’s such as Maurice Strong, who is also an adviser to Al Gore. James Hansen is also an associate of Al Gore. Maurice Strong and Al Gore are both members of the Club of Rome.

Kevin Rudd’s connections to these people can only be speculative, but with trips to the UN, a visit by Al Gore, the mad rush to ratify Kyoto, a public letter from James Hansen to Kevin Rudd, the mirroring of policy statements, virtually makes it ‘guilt by association.’

  29. Jeff says:

No Matt, I haven’t read “Silent Spring” and I inserted that information because Rachel Carson and Silent Spring was listed on the Aust. Government web page.
    You did read the link?
But I have read numerous references to the banning of DDT and this site:
    http://tinyurl.com/4goarw
is about the return of useage of DDT for mosquito control?

  30. Matt says:

I agree Steve - Inspirational stuff! I hear Monckton wrote to the government too trying to convince them the other way… or do you think that lobbying should not be necessary in governments if you are the good guys selling good science.

Re: silent spring - I don’t see how you could question reference to it in a history of sustainable development. Also DDT for malaria control has never been banned… In fact Carson herself in the book which I am quite confident in suggesting you’ve not read Jeff) “No responsible person contends that insect-borne disease should be ignored.”

I’m often told that just because the tobacco industry successfully lobbied for decades against the cancer link, it does not mean that the oil companies are similarly lobbying in favour of greenhouse gases… but I’ll only drop that one if skeptics stop trying to undermine AGW theory with absurd references to Silent Spring - a book written in 1962…

Agenda 21 - I’m proud to say that reading that document in 1996 set me on my career today… again inspirational stuff. Especially the bit about the Children, since I have two young ones of my own.

Thanks for the article Steve - it was nice to see you get on the AGW bandwagon for a change ;)

You guys could always hop along to Barry’s blog and chat to many of the people that Hansen recommended.

    • Agmates says:

      G’day Matt,

Thanks for the ‘tongue in cheek’ compliment. :)

Mate I was good - I didn’t bag James Hansen as you realize a could have with a link to any number of blog sites saying nasty things about him.

I did go to Barry’s Site to find the link about Geoengineering and I did link his name to his bio rather than say Andre Bolts description of Barry’s abilities as a scientist. :)

The whole point of the article was to let the Agmates community know just who is really Guiding Kevin Rudd on the science that he so fervently believes in.

  31. Jeff says:

Very informative and well written piece, thanks.

A look at an Australian Government website on “Sustainable Development” sets out some of the reasons this scenario is happening:
    http://www.environment.gov.au/esd/
In this page you will see reference to:-
Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” 1962, one of the reasons DDT was taken of the market, resulting in millions of deaths in the third world from malaria.

Paul Ehrlich’s “Population Bomb” 1968, population reduction,Earth freezing over and other alarmists fantasies.

Club of Rome “Limits to Growth” 1972, mirrors a lot of Ehrlich’s concepts.

Then in 1992, The United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development - or - Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro. At this summit there was speakers such as Maurice Strong, Bianca Jagger and a whole swag of green activists. Al Gore was also in attendance but attended an alternate “summit” nearby as well. Maurice Strong is an associate of Al Gore.
This Earth Summit produced the “Agenda 21″ document, a document used in determining a lot of our present day grief.
A dossier on Maurice Strong here:
