Farmers create off farm income through their own real estate company.
Wayne Fewtrell was born and raised on a dairy and small crops farm at Goomboorian just east of Gympie QLD. Today the Fewtrell family operate a farm at Veteran, just 20kms from where he was born.
Like most farmers Wayne & Christine were looking to diversify their family farming business. After a family conference over the kitchen table they looked at their strenghts and weaknesses as a family farming operation.
What they concluded was that they had not only a vast amount of practical farming experience in coastal QLD but also an intimate knowledge of land types and the local district and the community.
An obvious fit they felt was to buy a real estate business. So 2 & 1/2 years ago Wayne and Christine purchased a small local real estate business Gympie Property Specialists.

Wayne told us:
“We are not ‘flash’ real estate sales types. We just pride ourselves on giving our clients fair dinkum, honest and ethical service. We specialise in rural property and commercial sales. Christine is the backbone of the office, managing our rapidly growing Property Management Department as well as the business.
Our daughter Kate is doing her gap year with us before going to university next year and her main role is Receptionist as well as administration support for our Property Management department, Accounts Payable and the administration of Sale Contracts.
Our son Tom is currently studying Year 11 at Gympie High School and is our IT specialist after school and Saturdays.
The rest of our crew is treated as our extended family which creates a happy friendly work environment for us all.”
Since buying it the business has thrived. Wayne & Christine feel that as Real Estate Agents and farmers they get to meet and know many of the newcomers to the area which would never have been the case just working the farm.
“We’ve had to work hard, with long hours to make the business work. But being farmers we are use to that.
It’s impossible not to show the benefits of the Gympie region - our proximity to Brisbane, Cooloola and Sunshine Coasts. The natural beauty, growth potential and intermediate climate and friendly community minded people.
Attractive property values and future growth look very positive and a lot of people are looking at living and investing in the Gympie area.
The district has been very good to us and we believe other people will find that long term they can’t go wrong investing here.” said Wayne
