Live Exporter Acquitted of Animal Cruelty Charges

Agmates Editor - Steve TrumanAgmates Editor Steve Truman writes:

Livestock exporter Emanuels was acquitted of animal cruelty charges in a landmark case against the live export industry this week. Emanuels is urging the Western Australian State Government to close a loophole in its Animal Welfare Act. Click Here to read that story.

About 16 million live sheep are imported into the Middle East each year, with Australia supplying four million, including 2.5 million through Emanuel Exports.

South America, North Africa, China and Europe’s Eastern Bloc countries were major competitors and subject to far fewer, if any, animal welfare regulations.

Three-quarters of live sheep exported from Australia came from WA and cattle producers in the State’s vast north depend almost entirely on the live export trade. The live export trade in WA alone is worth $470 million a year.
