Contrary to the environmental impact study we believe that there will be very significant impacts on the lower Mary River , which we regard as starting at the Gunalda Range, where the new council boundaries will be.

We will co-operate closely with the Save the Mary Committee, which is based at Kadanga.”

“WE MUST HAVE A VOICE”

Media Release - 26th October 2007

That was the unanimous decision of everyone at the special meeting called to gauge the opinion of the community on the State Government proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.

Forty five people expressed their strident opposition to the proposed dam and the contents of the recently released Environmental Impact Statement in Maryborough last Thursday night.

“The downstream effects of the proposed dam have been dismissed out of hand in the EIS and the downstream communities have been completely ignored in the Government’s greedy grab for SEQ votes,” said anti-dam campaigner and Tiaro Councillor Darryl Stewart. “The real scientific evidence shows that the dam would be an environmental, economic and social disaster and moreover, is not needed to supply SEQ water now or into the future.”

“The only believable science in the whole statement is the page numbering system”, he said.

Cr. Stewart said that a Group would be formed as soon as possible and would have wide community representation. “The group will ensure that the community will be fully informed and consulted on all the issues pertaining to the proposed dam,” he said. ‘As soon as a venue can be arranged, a public meeting will be called to formally set up a campaign group with the first responsibility to produce a submission on the EIS by the ridiculously short timeframe of 3 December.”
