Opinion – Agmates Founder Steve Truman writes:
In my opinion rural QLD would do well to get to know this bloke. He’ll be the next Premier of QLD after Labor’s Anna Bligh.
I’m not talking about Jeff Seeney. Not that I have anything against Jeff but the numbers will never stack up for him. Jeff’s loved in the bush. A big strong bloke who calls it as he see’s it. He’s a bushie and that his problem.
For Jeff to become premier of QLD at some future time he has to appeal to the cosmopolitan and  urbanized folk of Brisbane and South East QLD – and he doesn’t.
The coalition need to win a swag of seat in that part of the state to ever wrestle power off the all conquering Labor party. Sure Jeff as leader will hold the National party together (by shear force if necessary) and they will remain the party of the bush – but in the city he’s about as well received as Peter Beattie at an anti council amalgamation rally at Barcaldine.
Now the deal in the coalition is that when they do win power, whichever coalition party has the most seats, their leader becomes Premier. If’s it’s the Nats with the most seats then Jeff Seeney would be Premier. If is the Lib’s it’s Dr Bruce Flegg.
Now let’s take a reality check. In simple terms to rule in their own rite the coalition needs 45 seats. They have 25 at the present. They have to win another 20 (forgetting for the sake of this exercise that Labour and Peter Beattie only got in the first time with the backing of Independent Peter Wellington.- thanks Peter)
So where are those twenty seats going to come from. The Nationals currently hold 17 seats – Not one of them in Brisbane. Except for Maroochydore & Beaudesert they don’t hold a seat anywhere were majority of QLD’ers live, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coasts.
Now the Liberals only hold 7 seats – but here’s the rub – 3 of those are on the Sunshine Coast, 2 on the Gold Coast and 2 in Brisbane.
The Nationals already have the country seats, there is no way they can even get 4 more in the country let alone 20. So it’s up to the Liberals and I think they have got just the Leader to do it in Dr Bruce Flegg.
Now I’ve never met Dr Flegg or even spoken to him, but I really like what I see. He’s a good decent family man. He served his country in the armed forces. After the Army and before politics he was a very successful and respect Medical Doctor (GP). My guess is that he got into politics for all the right reasons. Why else would he step away from being a well like and respected physician too take a substantial pay cut to become a politician. Unless he’s a massagists.
I’ve watched his progress since becoming Liberal Leader and it’s also apparent that in addition to being disciplined, well educated, a dedicated father of 4 boys and a decent honest bloke – he’s mentally tough and I reckon he’s on a mission.
Since becoming Liberal Leader he’s copped it from all sides – the Media has depicted him as a bumbling fool (not unlike they did with Jo) – His own party and the National party have tried to derail him, but he’s stuck it out. Why would he do that? As I said previously he doesn’t need to, to put it bluntly – “he’s not short of a quid” and doesn’t need the job.
I reckon I know why – he has a vision to lead and serve the people of this great state.
Yes there is a lot to like about Dr Bruce Flegg. He’ll succeed in having the Liberals win the hearts and minds of Queenslanders in the Booming south East of the state. He is a very successful and well respected Doctor who has lived and worked in the city of Brisbane all of his life. He knows Brisbane and knows the people; he knows how they think and what they want.
To me this bloke has an air of destiny about him –mark my words- leaders of the farm organizations AgForce (Peter Kenny & Co) and the other Agri-Political organization’s – get to know this bloke because on day he’ll be the leader of the Coalition and Queensland Premier.
Rural Queenslanders would do well to make sure this bloke understands and identifies with the struggles and issues that are life in the tough vast remoteness of Rural Queensland…Ă‚ Ă‚ Ă‚ Ă‚
